THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SKIMMING AND SCANNING TRAINING ON READING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT IN ENGLISH
Abstract: This study aimed to describe the use of skimming and scanning in comprehending English text. It can give advantages for English teacher and learners about finding the general idea or main idea in the text in the process reading. This research is n the form of experimental design and control design. This research only focuses on Learners’ reading comprehension. It presents a quantitative research which is to compare the score of students who thought by skimming and scanning technique and the student who are thought by conventional technique. This research conducted in quasi. The subjects were the university students of second semester at English department in Islamic University of Malang. The subjects were 42 EFL learners. The researcher used only two classes as sample instead of all classes of the second semester. Based on the research findings, the student who thought by using skimming and scanning technique have better achievement in their reading comprehension than the student who are thought by conventional technique. Based on the result of the study, the researcher hopes that this study will positively contribute to the future teaching and learning process, especially in teaching of reading because it can solve the students’ problem in comprehending a reading text.
